The Paris Fashion show has nothing on Google and Amazon when it comes to offering wearable technology.  The two titans of tech have recently weighed in with major advancements in wearables.  Amazon has just opened a Wearable Technology Store in the UK that offers more than 100 different wearable devices, including activity trackers, smart watches, smart glasses and wearable cameras.  Google last month rolled out their Android Wear operating system for smart watch developers.  This says nothing of the hundreds of companies that have also leapt into the rapidly expanding wearable's market. What, Why and Wear?

People are certainly talking about wearables.  The reported in a recent blog that “Twitter dominated as the main location of wearables with 75 percent of all mentions, with news sites a distant second at 10%. Year-on-year the conversation around wearables has increased an impressive 190 per cent when comparing the first quarter of 2013 (973,300 mentions) to that of 2014 (2,816,814 mentions).”  They also reported that the conversation seems to be relegated mainly to the United States, the rest of the globe seeming to take a wait and see attitude.

What’s to see on

If you are into smart watches and bracelets you will have your hands full since the site carries hundreds of offerings.  This in itself is impressive when you consider that the smart watch as we know it really only got its start about three years ago with the first rumors of the Apple iWatch.   While hundreds of imitators have thrown their hats into the smart watch ring, the iWatch is still not available for sale and rumors about its description and launch date are as elusive as that of a unicorn.  This is curious in and of itself since Samsung reported to Reuters that it had sold more than 800,000 of its Galaxy Gear smart watches in two months.

Priced at around $300, the Gear works as an accessory to its market-leading Galaxy smartphone, with a small OLED screen offering basic functions like photos, hands-free calls and message notifications.  Samsung has poured marketing resources into the Gear with heavy advertisements and collaborations with fashion shows to seize leadership in the wearable computer market after the device got off to a rocky start after being critically panned by reviewers.

As for the vaunted iWatch, rumor has it that it will hit the market in September.  That’s if you can trust the pundits.

More Smart Wearable Tech on the Shelves

Of course, smart watches are hardly the only wearable tech currently on the shelf.  If you are one of those leading an active lifestyle, there are a number of wearables that are designed to track everything from the amount of distance you travel afoot to the total calories burned, to time spent idling and/or sleeping.  One of the more intriguing of these is a device called the Jawbone UP24, whic,h strangely enough is worn, on one’s wrist.

If tracking your every step, bite and REM sleep isn’t enough, there is now an entire armada of wearable cameras and mounts designed to record your every move in HD video.  So whether you prefer to walk, run, drive, bike, hang glide, spelunk, scuba dive or jump out of a perfectly good airplane, there is a camera and mount designed to allow you to capture the moment. Should you wish to capture those selfies with a camera mounted on your wrist, head, foot or chest, rest assured that someone somewhere has created the perfect camera rig. 

Move Over Google Glass - Here Comes Google Contacts

As if Google Glass was not enough, the company has partnered with Swiss drug company, Novartis, to develop a type of smart contact lens that contains non-invasive sensors, microchips and other embedded miniature electronics that can be designed to either monitor the glucose levels in the tears of diabetics, or that can restore 20/20 vision to people who require reading glasses.  (I am not making this up.)  While the prototype was unveiled in January, the smart contacts are not expected to reach the market for several years, by which time wearers will probably be able to use them to take picturessince Google recently filed a patent for Embedded Microscopic Cameras.  This will come as a relief to many so-called "Glassholes" who have experienced everything from intimidation to forceable ejection from movie theaters, restaurants and other public places for wearing Google Glass.

You Say You Have Nothing to Wear?

If you think that smart watches, bracelets and helmets are outré, then you may want to look into some of the latest developments in wearables.

A Taiwanese company, AIQ Smart Clothing contains everything from built-in lighting and/or heating, to their Bioman shirts, which are machine washable and contain embedded electrodes that are designed to connect wirelessly to any tablet or smartphone in order to provide the wearer with real time biometric data.

In the meantime, expect the rush to computerize other forms of apparel in the not too distant future.    

Already I have seen everything from bionic bras designed to produce electrical power, to an emotion-sensing dress that changes color to suit your mood.  (Boy could we men get behind this invention!)

Speaking of women, in years to come as wearable technology becomes ever more ubiquitous, will the lament of spouses transform into one of, “I can’t go out tonight.  I have nothing to wear that reflects my mood changes.”

Why Use Stories?

Stories carry and convey emotion, clarity and focus. A good story of how you solved a customer’s problem can easily be understood, but more importantly, it raises emotions from the subconscious to the conscious level. Emotions trump logic or other decision-making processes, motivating people to take action. A good story portrays you as the white knight that solved the customer's problem. This is especially true when you  use emotional words to express their problem, and then presented your solution using motivational words that provided the benefits they needed. (My book, “60 Seconds to Success,” has several sections devoted to this subject.) Your rescue becomes a tale worth telling. Stories allow you to choose words that probe for pain and elicit an immediate response. On top of that, good stories have long shelf lives (so-called “evergreen attributes”). That’s why great sales presentations ― ones that often include compelling stories ― often lead to referrals and sales long after the event has ended.

Secret #1: It Can Work Forever!

Here’s how content marketing with stories can help you leverage your efforts. Create evergreen messages based on principles that don't go out of style. I like to create articles that I’ll then turnaround and use in my presentations. If you create a great story and present it at a meeting, it may help you that day. However, by recording your story as a podcast or video, it can be used over and over again to motivate much larger numbers of prospects. In essence, it becomes a reusable marketing tool. Unlike, conventional advertising (including newspaper, radio, TV or coupons), which are a pay-per-play ways of delivering a message. These evergreen marketing messages, if designed right, can work for you over and over again.  You pay just once for their creation and they keep working nearly forever!

Where can they be used?  
Your stories can be used in blogs, videos, podcasts, social posts, on your websites, and posted to countless locations on the Internet. By taking the time to create a well-prepared story (“edutainment,” soft sell sales pitch), you can leverage your time to produce quality content pieces that can be used over and over again. For example, your research notes or screenplay for a video can be repurposed and used to create a blog or in-depth article. If you videotape your presentation, the video and audio portions can be used to make a YouTube video plus an audio podcast. If you created a PowerPoint presentation, it can be used as a slide share as well.

Secret #2: BOGTF - Buy One, Get Two Free

When you create your first content piece for your presentation, you have created the foundation for the other two. A great example of how well this works is the success of our BlogTalkRadio show, “Working the Web to Win.” Each week we research a subject, create an article (blog post), which we then use as notes for our on-air presentation (i.e., real-time radio show). Simultaneously, we also often create a Google Hangout (which creates a video automatically). The show becomes an audio podcast, the Google Hangout becomes a YouTube Video. The end result is we produced three top quality content pieces ― a blog, a video and a podcast ― ready to post to our various Internet properties. We then actively push these content pieces out to Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, YouTube and several other social networks. Do this enough times and you’ll have enough material to create an eBook. Keep this up for a year and you’ll have sufficient amount of content for a 120-page paperback book!

Secret #3: Capture Stories Ideas as They Happen 

I’ve already taught you two of our secrets to leveraging your efforts. Now let's look at ways to capture your story ideas as they happen in real time. Throughout the day, you’ll encounter problems, important issues, complaints or even funny events. These are story lines waiting to be recorded.

Easy – keep a notepad in your pocket at all times and jot down a few notes as to what the issue was and how it was resolved. You now have a great starting point to build your next blog, YouTube video or podcast. I know what you’re thinking: these note s do not an article (or video/podcast) make! And you're right, they don’t, but they do provide you with a solution to the hardest part, which is getting started with a useful story line. It's been my experience that getting started is the hardest part. This solves that issue.

Don’t like low tech solutions?
Well, then, just whip out your smartphone and verbally record your thoughts. Snap a few pictures or shoot a quick video of the issue or idea and ― voila! ― you’re well on your way to the first piece of emotional content. Now just add your solution and flesh out your story.

Other tips worth noting
I like to outline my ideas. I’ll take my story line that I created with any of the above methods and then brainstorm an outline. I write my free flow of ideas by breaking the subject down into three parts: the introduction, the body and the summary. I then further break down these three main sections into three sub-parts, or as many sub-parts as I need. Again, like magic, I have moved my story line to the next level. Once my outline is fleshed out, I immediately move to writing my rough draft. I don’t worry about grammar or spelling at this stage, I just want to get my preliminary thoughts down. Once I have my first draft, I set the article down for a couple of hours before having at it again. The second go round is where I clean up my rough draft's grammar and spelling. I also try to clarify my ideas so they make more sense.

Two more useful tips
Ginger grammar software.
First, use the best grammar/spelling checker you can afford, and second, get a writing buddy.  What comes in MS Word isn’t sufficient, in my opinion. That’s why I use a program called Ginger. It’s the best that I’ve found to date. It finds wrong word usage and many other mistakes that Word often misses. It will even read the content back to you, which I find extremely valuable. Now, as good as Ginger is, there is nothing like having a blog buddy to really make a difference. Carl, my co-host and business partner, is my blog buddy. Working as a team makes the job so much easier.

Final Thoughts
Once you have your story fleshed out, your next step is to duplicate your story in a different medium. I like videos because people prefer to watch videos verses reading or just listing to a story. Videos are relatively easy to make today because laptops, tablets and smartphones often come with everything you need to turn your outline into a video. It's not a huge task to create a PowerPoint presentation from your story. PowerPoint presentations can be recorded via Hangout or WebEx, which, in turn, creates a video. You can then upload that video to YouTube. The audio portion of your video can be separated to create an MP3, WAV or WMF file. This can also be uploaded as your podcast. I use Corel Video Studios and Audacity for my video and audio work. There are many useful software products you can use to create these mini-productions.
If you want to create animation videos, there’s an easy solution for you to use called PowToons. This is an Internet software service that allows you to create very sophisticated animated presentations without any prior knowledge of video animation. Any business person can create compelling stories with this product. Once completed, uploading to YouTube is a piece of cake. Best of all, PowToons even has a free version. I provided three content creation secrets and many tips for fleshing out your ideas so that you can create a polished message. These techniques allow you to convert your original story into other mediums, thus providing you a means to not only re-purpose your content, but to also create multimedia versions that can be used as unique credibility building content in social networks and other web properties. Utilizing these techniques will save you countless hours and will produce a highly leveraged approach to content creation for your marketing efforts.

How to Make Money with Internet Radio and Podcasting

Several years ago, Carl Weiss, my business partner and I decided to create our own Internet radio show. Our reasoning was based on specific principles and goals. First and foremost, we believe that quality content is king for organic search engine ranking, so anything we did had to have lots of first-rate material. Second, we needed to produce unique, useful information to post to our weekly blogs and social nets. We felt this would distinguish us from our competition. Third, doing a weekly Internet radio show would force us to do lots of research, stay current, understand the World Wide Web and search technology. Engaging in so much research and writing about what we had learned would facilitate our ability to produce quality content, which in turn would drive rankings for the keywords we’d chosen.

In the beginning, we hadn’t considered actually making money from our shows, blog or podcast. We just wanted to produce high-quality, keyword-optimized content because we felt that doing so would get us on Page One of Google Search.  Fast forward to today: We have a strong Page One position in the top three search engines. We have a hit blog talk radio show and our weekly blog, which is connected to the show, receives more than 5,500 page views a month.  Plus, we’ve been able to not only monetize the show, but also the blog and several websites as well. I’d say we exceeded our goal. So in this article, I’m going to impart five important things businesses need to know in order to make money with Internet radio and podcasting.

How to Get Started

It starts with research.
If you want to replicate our success, here’s your starting point. First, research your keywords and phrases in AdWords. Choose a phrase that has at least 10,000 searches a month and at the same time, shows less competition. Next, you need to create your infrastructure. This includes creating a Landing Page for the show, a blog site for the show, and setting up your top five social networks (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+ and YouTube). provides everything you need to create the show and podcast. It even has online support for best practices and show tips. Next, commit to doing your research every week to create a high-quality article to publish as your blog, which you’ll also use as source material for your radio show. (FYI: We also committed to providing a weekly newsletter and sending out a weekly email blast to the connections we already had.) Understand it will take a little while for you to get proficient at producing the show. Continued practice will bring improvements, and you’ll be producing the content necessary to drive organic search position.

How to Get Found

Getting found is not as hard as some SEO gurus would have you believe. It’s our contention that there are five key factors your content must have in order to have the power to drive organic position:
  1. It must be delivered consistently
  2. It must be high quality
  3. It must be relevant to the audience
  4. It must be timely 
  5. It must be useful
Content that’s delivered with these four factors will drive organic search position. Carl and I feel so strongly about this that we’ve embraced these four tenants as our core marketing principles. Most people fail when they try to cherry pick these principles. That is, they produce content irregularly, or provide mediocre quality, or provide content that’s irrelevant, or their content isn’t delivered at the appropriate time. Worse, they give up before they gain position. 

When we started our radio show/podcast efforts, we weren’t anywhere to be found organically in Google Search. But after three months, we started to show up on Page Four. By month five, we were showing up organically on Page One of Yahoo and Bing periodically, and Page Two of Google. By nine months we were constantly showing up organically on Page One of all three of these main search engines, although not at the top of the page. By the end of our first year, we’d reached the top of Page One organically on all three of the top search engines. Today we have multiple organic Page One positions and own the number one position for the phrase “working the web.” 

What made this happen was following our formula of producing an engaging weekly Internet radio show/podcast and, correspondingly, writing a high-quality, relevant, and timely blog, which we’d then consistently post to the top five social networks. This meant we were creating a minimum of seven coordinated and keyword-optimized content pieces week in and week out. We also coupled this with email blasts and newsletters. If you add up all the content created in a year, it was more than 800 pieces.

How to Build Your Audience

To gain a dedicated following, you must produce exceptional quality content at least every week. For “Working the Web to Win,” that means teamwork. Both Carl and I write, so we act as “blog buddies,” editing and proofing each other’s work. On top of that, we both do separate research for the show. In addition to Carl and I editing each other’s blogs, we also run them past our editor (and fellow copywriter), Robert Kaye. We shoot for the best quality we can produce in the time frame we have.

Always look for ways to improve your content and the quality of the show. Reach out to leaders in the industry and ask them for tips. Better yet, ask them to appear on your show as guests and interview them. Nothing can beef up the quality of a show (or a blog) like the presence or input from various industry leaders. We regularly contact leaders in the industries related to the topics we’re writing and speaking about.  Do your research; be cognizant of who the leaders are in your industry. Make sure you court and engage them to share your content. A good way to do this is to share their content first. Then after a while of doing this, send them your material and ask for their opinion. Also, find a dozen or so people who’ll agree to read, comment on and the repost (i.e., share) your show and blogs to their own social nets. Make sure you do the same for them. This is a very powerful method to create distribution. The trick to this marketing method is managing your team. If people drop out, add others.

Another item we’ve used with success was creating a video cast of the BlogTalkRadio show that would air on YouTube a few days later. You can create one using Google Hang Outs, or use a screen capture program of your choice to record your screens and voice. When we do this, we use two computers, one for the radio show and one for the Hangout. Again, this will become another piece in your weekly content arsenal. This will be an ongoing process.

However, quality and regularity aren’t enough. You have to push out invitations to followers daily. You have to announce and promote the show multiple times the day before it airs.  We also “push it out to the social net” a couple of times the day of the show (every Tuesday), and again, a couple of times after the show has aired.

Endless choices.
Make sure you’re committed to engaging in weekly marketing. If you stop doing this, your audience growth stops as well. Even if you have a bad week or even month, do not give up. When we started, we had less than 200 followers after four months of hard work. However, by month six we had 2,000! You need to be committed to this project for a full year to see if you can make a go of it. Don't forget to add a call-to-action on your blog and the show. Ask readers and listeners to comment and share your material. You never know who will see it.

Publish press releases regularly. This is for the local media as well as regional, national and international, if your subject warrants such attention. And, don’t forget your email blasts and newsletters. Send your emails to opt-in subscribers only. Sending email blasts to non-subscribers is considered spamming, which could get your domain address blacklisted; worst-case scenario, you can be fined and black listed.

How to Monetize Your Efforts

There are many ways to achieve this. You can easily add AdWords network ads to your blog. You can also sell ad space on your blog site, your show’s website and it’s Landing Page. BlogTalkRadio also has an ad stream and a revenue sharing mechanism you can use. However, this is predicated on having a big enough following that you’re generating at least 1,000 page views a month. For example, our radio show has received as many as 30,000 downloads in one week, and our blog receives around 1,500 page views a week. We now have a large enough aggregate following across our seven Twitter accounts (over 50,000 followers) and another 10,000 if you include LinkedIn, Facebook, Google+ and YouTube. Granted, we started with zero just like everybody else. It just goes to show that sticking to your commitment can really make a difference after two years.

The best way to make money from your efforts is to monetize the sites yourself. Eliminate the middleman and sell your ad space directly. We sell banner space on all our sites and we provide sponsor mentions during the show. Furthermore, we support our sponsors with promo post across our social networks as well as providing them with testimonials. As a rule, you’ll make more money by going directly to the sponsors than by going thru Google’s or Yahoo’s ad networks. We’ve found that bundling banner ads with sponsor mentions, along with social media and email blasts, are much easier to sell than just banner ads by themselves. Never underestimate the power of bring more value to the table. The more you can show the sponsor your aggregate views, the more likely they’ll spend money with you. Having lots of page views (i.e., 1,500 a week) and followers (10,000+) is much more valuable than providing nebulous numbers or empty promises. Sponsors are looking for value and ROI, even if they’re looking to brand themselves. 

Repurposing Your Content Library

Once you’ve been in the content creating business for a while, you can start to build a library of quality material.  Having a database of well-written blogs, articles, podcasts and webcasts will give you enough fodder to create several books. Online e-books can be created for very little money and self-publishing today is easier than ever. Both Amazon and Barnes and Nobles can be your partners for eBook publishing. You can expect to net between 25 and 50%, on a soft back book, depending on how close you are to the printing process.  If you’re truly self-published, your net will be higher. If you’re using one of the “self-publishing companies”, your true net will be closer to 20% because the “self publishing company” is taking part of the profit to cover printing on demand and a sales mechanism.

When you’ve gained a substantial following (say 50,000 fans) and you have amassed a large library of quality material, you can repackage that same content into a sellable digital library or database. This can be done by subscription, or by creating individual sellable SKUs that are topic specific. They can be sold directly on your blog site, website, in the Apple store, in Google Play and even on  The product can be all-digital on sold on CD, DVD or on memory cards.

This content can also provide you with another means to make money: You can give it away as a means to attract the right kind of clients. That’s right, you can give it away as a complimentary inducement on Landing Pages, where visitors can get your free content if they provide you with their contact information (thereby providing you with a warm lead). These, in turn, can be used as follow-up marketing tools for your company. You can even ask clients if they’ll allow you to share their contact info with a few appropriate vendors, giving you another source of income.

I provided real-life examples of how we achieved this goal and listed detailed steps so that any business can do the same.
