Why Do Social Media Giants Change Without Notice?

By Hector Cisneros

The Times They Are A-Changin” – so wrote Bob Dylan several decades ago, but I don’t think he had in mind the Changes that are constantly occurring in Social Media. I woke up on the 23rd of March and found that Hootsuite (the tool I use to post to social media) only allowed me to post to one Twitter account at a time. The month before that, Facebook announced (after they made changes) that there were altering (again) how news feed post would be filtered. Soon after purchasing LinkedIn, Microsoft totally revamped what you could do and how you could use that social network. In this episode of Working the Web to Win, we will explore the positive and negative effects caused by social media evolution. We will delve into why these changes occur, and what you as a subscriber can do to make sure these changes have a minimal effect on your business and personal social life. Now let’s dig into these never-ending changes.

It’s a New Year and the Rules Have Changed

There are several old sayings that come to my mind when we roll over a new year. Here are some of my
favorites:

“The only thing that is constant is change.”
“The only thing that is certain is that nothing is certain.”  The last is, "The only thing that is certain is death and taxes.”

In this article of Working the Web to Win, we’ll explore the many changes that last year brought forth.  We’ll also prognosticate as to what this year will give birth to.  By the end of this article, the reader will be aware that change is inevitable, certainty does not exit, all things die and, yes, we all have to pay taxes (even if they are hidden). So if you don’t want to be caught asleep at the switch, here is your online wakeup call.

The marketing world we live in today is a far cry from the one our parents grew up in during the 50’s and 60’s. TV, News Paper, Yellow Pages and Radio have hardly changed their format since their inception. In contrast, the internet is a rapidly evolving medium. If you look at all the marketing segments of the Internet, Social media is the most volatile.
In fact, more rapid changes are coming to LinkedIn, Facebook, Google+ and Twitter. The last 12 months showed massive changes. The past four months have seen a slew of new features, many updated or upgraded elements and there does not seem to be an end in sight! How will these social media changes affect your businesses' social standing? Will it mean additional changes in how you manage your social media? Are you going to have to join other networks? Read this week's blog post and listen in to our weekly radio show and learn why you need to keep up with the Joneses, (your competition) to win with social media.
