Working the Web to Win is dedicated to helping businesses navigate the ever-changing & unforgiving waters of the World Wide Web. You'll find answers to questions on SEO, Social Media, Video Marketing, Blogging, Content Marketing, Internet Security & much more.
So, you’re on a budget, but you know
that your website’s organic position is extremely important since that’s how people
are going to find your type of business online. The question is, “How do you get
on page one of Google search without paying an SEO company a ton of money to get
there?” The answer: You have to do a lot of the SEO work yourself. The reality is,
without the right optimization tools, this is a tough row to hoe! In this episode
of Working the Web to Win, we will cover my favorite SEO software tools and apps.
Some are free, some have minimal cost, and
some cost more. But all of them make getting found much easier than if you tried
to make this happen without them. So, fire up your computer system as we explore
my favorite Free and not so Free SEO tools for getting on page one of Google search.
Several years ago, a client came to
me with the complaint that they had never
shown up on page one of search. They hired me, and
I used
several SEO tools that I had purchased. As a result, I got this client
on page one of Google, Yahoo and Bing search
engines in about three months. Today it is harder to achieve this because there
ten times as
many websites on the web and
competition for organic search position is fierce. To make matters worse, Google
and other search engines continuously change their ranking algorithms. It's true
that their primary emphasis is still user preference (shown by traffic) along with
content authority, quality, relevance, timeliness, usefulness, and infotainment value. Having said that, I can still tell you, that you would be hard-pressed to obtain and hold a page one position
on Google or any other search engine without engaging in keyword research, looking
at your competition, measuring the effectiveness of your website’s elements and
then monitoring the results of your efforts. To help my readers out, I have researched,
used and provided my top SEO tool list to make it easier for you to choose what
SEO tools you will need for your efforts. So, let’s get started.
Watch Googles Webmaster Video on How to Hire an SEO
Analytics, Google Maps and Google Webmaster Academy. Let’s face
it. If you’re not using Google’s stuff to maximize your position in Google search,
you’re missing the Google Boat. We believe that Google likes it when you utilize
their stuff. This is because you can’t easily
trick Google with their own products. They
say they don’t reward you for using their products, but there is no doubt in my
mind that they understand their products and the results they produce. This leads
to a better search engine ranking.
#2 Blogger and YouTube - I want to mention both Blogger and YouTube in this section
as SEO tools even though they are really content
publishing platforms. However, if you use them regularly (at least weekly)
and produce
high quality, relevant, timely, useful content, it will produce ranking because
of the traffic these platforms create. Both of these platforms require that you
build an audience, but they are media-rich and both can be monetized as well. More people read blogs today than people read
any other type of periodical, and 4 out of five people would rather watch a video
that read your webpage. Visual multimedia is where it’s at, and you can build an audience if you're producing
a quality product. This audience can get strong enough to become as useful as Google
search on its own! Other Search engine webmaster tools worth looking at are
Bing.com webmaster toolbox and Yoast webmaster toolbox.
#3 Ranking and SEO, Apps
– If you're using Firefox, Comodo Dragon,
Chrome, the Internet Explorer or Edge, you can find useful SEO and page
ranking tools in their app stores. You will find many apps that will do the trick
depending on which browser you're using. I use most of the web browsers available
to test websites for look and feel when they
are built. I also use browser plugins (apps)
to look at page ranking, traffic, and other
stats as well. A good plugin for chrome is Open SEO Stats. It isavailable in the Chrome app store.
#4 MOZ SEO
Products - MOZ.comwebsite lists two all-in-one SEO products designed
to help a webmaster improve their organic search
ranking. Moz Pro is their entry
level SOE product that includes: keyword research,
link building, site audits, and page optimization insights, as part of the package.
MOZ Local is an SEO product designed to help businesses improve their local SEO
position. Moz Local states that “consistency is key when it comes to connecting
customers with your business online. Using MOZ Local
helps you create a consistent business profile and ecosystem across all search engines,
making it easier to get found and recognized.
#5 Authority

speed and make it faster. GTmetrix provides the insight on how fast the elements
on your site loads and provides recommendations on how to improve their performance.
This is particularly important for mobile
websites as this will affect how mobile sites rank.
#7 Screaming Frog SEO Spider – This free download allows you
to analyze SEO elements on up to 500 URLs.
The Screaming SEO Spider program runs on your desktop, installed locally on PC’s,
Mac’s or Linux computers. It is used to crawl
website links, images, CSS, script, and apps
to evaluate on page SEO. You can also purchase a more extensive version which integrates
into Google analytics, will crawl unlimited websites and includes another ten powerful features.
#8 SpyFu - SpyFu is a keyword research tool that provides
intelligence on the keywords that your competitors are bidding or are using to rank
their websites in organic search and pay per click. Being able to see what a competitor
is doing is a valuable tool that can provide information to make or break your SEO
and PPC campaigns. The service costs $79 per month.
#9 Keywords Explorer – Their website states that they offer the
most comprehensive keyword analysis product on the market. Discover thousands of
great keywords to rank for, analyze their ranking difficulty and calculate traffic
potential. Their system provides: Thousands of
keyword suggestions, supports
100+ countries and provides Accurate “Search volume”. It also provides a Keyword difficulty score (i.e. calculates
how hard it will be to rank for that keyword), clicks metric, Advanced metrics,
SERP overview & Positions History, and the ability to create Keywords lists.
You can try it with their 7-day trial for $7. They offer a Lite version for $99/month,
a Standard version for $179/month and their Advanced version for $399 per month.
#10 Keyword Rank SERP Checker from OnlineDomainTools– provides a variety of
webmaster tools including a keyword rank check for your domain on various search
engines. This can be performed by region like
Google global or on just a specific country. Their site also provides Network Tools,
Web and Browser Tools, Domain Tools, Security and Privacy Tools, Data and conversions
Tools and Coder Tools.
any keyword or phrase, along with Cost Per Click (CPC) and search volume data. It
allows you to tailor your results by domain, location, and device. SERP’s Keyword Research Database
- tool shows you Pay Per Click (PPC) bid prices for specified keywords and phrases.
This provides an idea of the traffic amount
and search attempts by users for specific keywords.
#12 Web of Trust (MyWOT) – Provides a ranking system to
show if a website is trustworthy. It provides a browser plugin that uses a “traffic
light color scheme” to list a website as “gray circle – too new to rate, green
circle
- safe, yellow circle – Suspicious and Red circle – Unsafe. Their browser plugin
is powered by 140 million user inputs and
machine learning. Their free browser extensions, mobile app, and API will check to see if a website is safe (in
the search listings) before you click on it. I have included this tool because it
is possible to have your site listed in their database as suspicious or unsafe and
you need to be able to communicate with them to fix any erroneous rating.
#13 Link-Assistant.com SEO PowerSuite
– Their website states that SEO PowerSuite is a one-stop SEO software platform
that covers every step of an SEO campaign regardless of caliber. It covers everything
from rankings to on-page SEO to backlinks. I have used this platform in the past
myself and can tell you it is comprehensive. It provides an intuitive
user interface
and many pro-level features. It can be used by SEO newbies and experts alike. It
can be DOWNLOAD FOR FREE with the Pro version
selling for $299. They also offer an Enterprise

of SEO work. Including; keywords, rankings, backlinks, on-page and content data,
mobile SEO, social media, analytics, and SEO reports. SEO PowerSuite offers unlimited
sites, keywords, and backlinks to track, and many other features. This is a desktop platform that does not use cloud
service. I recommend giving it a try since it offers a free download trial.
If you’re a webmaster or an entrepreneur
who is trying to improve the ranking of their website, these tools are a terrific
way to get started. There is no way you can improve your ranking without testing,
measuring and monitoring the elements of your website with some of these tools.
Many have free trials, all provide useful data, and
most have entry-level pricing
as well. If you're serious about improving your website
ranking, you have only two choices. You can download, learn and use one or several
of the above-listed webmaster tools to improve
your SEO ranking or you can hire an SEO company
and let them use their tools and labor to improve your position. It’s important
to understand that just downloading, buying and learning how to use the above-listed tools “Will NOT” Improve Your Search Ranking! Only taking the time to learn
how to successfully
use them and then engaging in the labor to execute the campaigns will improve
ranking. There is no magic button, app or software that will make that happen. Anyone
who is trying to sell you a low-cost magic SEO solution is trying to take a shortcut
into your wallet! Stay clear of anything that
sounds too good to be true.
That’s my opinion; I look forward to
hearing yours.
